Council Member nominated by the Law Society of Nunavut
Sara Siebert was nominated as a Federation Council Member by the Law Society of Nunavut in 2018. Her practice, based in Iqaluit, focuses on criminal defence at the trial and appellate levels. Sara also sits on the Nunavut Criminal Code Review Board and is Counsel for Elections Nunavut.
Sara was admitted to the Law Society of Upper Canada (now Law Society of Ontario) in 2005, and to the Law Society of Nunavut in 2014. She graduated from Dalhousie University with a BA (Hons) in Political Science and International Development Studies, and received her LLB and a Masters in Letters focusing on International Criminal Law in 2005 from Trinity College, University of Dublin. She also holds a MA (International Affairs) from the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs, Carleton University.
In addition to her law practice, Sara is a Director of the Canadian Council of Criminal Lawyers, a member of the Law Society of Nunavut’s Discipline Committee, and is the Learning Group Facilitator for the Nunavut Bar Admissions Course.
Before moving to Iqaluit, Sara was Lead Criminal Counsel and Clinic Director for the Kitikmeot Law Centre in Cambridge Bay. She previously served as a Legal Officer (Reserve) with the Office of the Judge Advocate General of the Canadian Armed Forces, and deployed as a legal advisor on Canadian Forces Operations overseas.
