Council Member nominated by the Law Society of British Columbia
Herman Van Ommen was nominated to Federation Council by the Law Society of British Columbia in 2016. He was formerly the senior partner of the litigation group at McCarthy Tétrault LLP in Vancouver, and Regional Managing Partner of the firm from 2012 to 2015. Herman attended McGill University for his undergraduate work and received his LLB in 1984 from the University of Victoria. He was called to the bar in British Columbia in 1985, and appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2012.
He has served as a Bencher of the Law Society of British Columbia since 2009 and is now a Life Bencher and Past President. He has been active in the work of the law society as Chair of the Governance Committee, Access to Legal Services Advisory Committee and Law Firm Regulation Task Force. He has also served as a member of the law society’s Complainants’ Review Committee, Finance and Audit Committee, and Regulation and Insurance Working Group.
Mr. Van Ommen has also served on the executive of the Vancouver Bar Association. He has also instructed at the Professional Legal Training Courses and frequently speaks on ethics and practice issues at various client and continuing legal education seminars. He is a Director of the United Way Lower Mainland, and has volunteered with Operation Rednose.
