David A. McWhinnie

Council Member nominated by the Law Society of Yukon
David A. McWhinnie was nominated to the Federation Council by the Law Society of Yukon in 2018. He is a criminal trial lawyer with substantial criminal appellate experience, currently in private practice in the Yukon.
Mr. McWhinnie served as a federal prosecutor for nearly 30 years, retiring from the Public Prosecution Service in 2017 as General Counsel. His prosecution duties took him across all three northern Territories. He also served in the federal Crimes against Humanity/War Crimes unit, and later in the Proceeds of Crime section.
First called to the Alberta bar in 1984, Mr. McWhinnie was previously active in the bars of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. A member of the Discipline Committee of the Yukon Law Society, Mr. McWhinnie also serves as an outside mentor/practice advisor to the Yukon Legal Aid program.
