Federation Statement on the Russian Invasion of Ukraine

The Federation of Law Societies of Canada joins the international legal community in its unequivocal condemnation of the unprovoked attack by Russia on Ukraine and its people. The invasion of Ukraine is a brazen repudiation of the established international order and an assault on the Rule of Law. It also constitutes an egregious violation of the internationally recognized and inviolable human rights of the Ukrainian people.

Federation President Nicolas Plourde said “These illegal actions by Russia are antithetical to the idea that sovereign nations should be free and secure to determine their own future and conduct themselves within an institutional framework that comports with international norms and values, such as an independent legal profession and judiciary, among other bedrock institutions that underpin civil societies based on the Rule of Law.”

The Federation urges the Government of Canada to continue its efforts to bring about a reversal of this unacceptable situation and to provide every assistance to the people of Ukraine.

The Federation is the national coordinating body of Canada’s 14 law societies, mandated by provincial and territorial statutes to regulate Canada’s 125,000 lawyers, Quebec’s 3,800 notaries and Ontario’s 10,000 licensed paralegals in the public interest. As directed by the law societies, the Federation speaks on matters of national importance related to the independence of Canada’s legal profession, the administration of justice and the Rule of Law, among other issues.
