Council Member nominated by the Law Society of British Columbia
Herman Van Ommen was elected to Federation Council effective November 2016. He is the senior partner of the litigation group at McCarthy Tétrault LLP in Vancouver, and was the Regional Managing Partner of the firm from 2012 to 2015. Herman attended McGill University for his undergraduate work and received his LLB in 1984 from the University of Victoria. He was called to the bar in British Columbia in 1985, and appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2012.
He has served as a Bencher of the Law Society of B.C. since 2009, and will be the law society’s President in 2017. He has been active in the work of the law society as Chair of the Governance Committee, Access to Legal Services Advisory Committee and Law Firm Regulation Task Force. He has also served as a member of the law society’s Complainants’ Review Committee, Finance and Audit Committee, and Regulation and Insurance Working Group.
Mr. Van Ommen has also served on the executive of the Vancouver Bar Association. He has also instructed at the Professional Legal Training Courses and frequently speaks on ethics and practice issues at various client and continuing legal education seminars. He is a Director of the United Way Lower Mainland, and has volunteered with Operation Rednose.
